Toys
2019
Porcelain Toys were created as a result of studying function and functionality of everyday objects. Howard Risatti, a theorist in the field of craft, highlighted this unique relationship between function and utility. For most objects, it is considered that they can be used in multiple ways in a certain situation, despite their primarily function being something completely different.
Toys are a reflection on the heritage and importance of useful objects in ceramics. Their creation is based on researching fluidity of function and utility. Their shapes resemble real toys; a spinning top, a juggling piece and a handle with a cup, intended for catching a ball. Despite the form of real toys being quoted almost verbatim in their artwork equivalent, there is a very important difference in the material from which they are made.
Toys are made out of porcelain which is a fine, sensitive material. Therefore, they are too fragile and delicate to fulfil their function as toys. It becomes impossible to play with them, meaning that their original purpose gets lost. Choice of the material transforms them into an exhibition object.
